The greatest teams I have been a part of have a shared goal, values and the ambition to win. Whether one is establishing a team from scratch or joining an existing group, there are a set of principles that result in success. As Michael Jordan once said: “Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships"
I have always enjoyed being part of a team, rather than solo efforts. Indeed, most team players know that the group is more important than the individual but we also recognise that one person’s grit and determination can inspire the team. In simple terms, most of us will exert far more blood, sweat and tears for our friends and colleagues in the pursuit of the group’s success.
The teams I currently have the privilege of being a part of are Cross Digital, Elate, Exeter Eagle Owls, Ireland and Saxons. All these teams maintain our values of courage, dedication and ambition in the face of adversity. We aim to overcome challenges and achieve our goals. When we are firing on all cylinders, this lethal concoction exudes greatness and frankly can leave me in awe of my fellow brothers and sisters. Perversely, when this fails, disappointment can follow which should be treated with grace and dignity, for we all fall short from time to time. It is in these times of setbacks and losses, that the care we give each other is most needed and felt most deeply.
If you are not part of a team that cares when you win but cares more when you don't; it's time to join a different team or create your own. If you do have this wonderful gift that we call a team - cherish it, help it flourish, protect it and invite others to join.
